Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application, she was finally accepted. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
